unnatural

artwork created: 2016

This work examines the eurocentric beauty norms of western society and their effect on women of colour. These normas reinforce the idea that straight hair is best and that curly and kinky natural hair types are not beautiful. The piece was inspired by my relationship with my own curly hair, and my childhood wishes for long straight hair. The work depicts a young Black woman having her hair straightened. The figure sits uncomfortably, anxiously looking to the side as a pair of white hands straightens her hair. Half of the figures hair has been straightened - and in becoming so has turned blonde; while the other half is dark and natural. This artwork is a comment on societies enforcement of eurocentric beauty standards on black and brown women, conditioning us into believing that our natural selves are not beautiful due to our natural features not mirroring those of white people. The piece was displayed in the NGV's Top Arts 2017 exhibition, winning the People's Choice Award.
