slug juice

artwork created: May 2023

‘slug juice’ is a piece i created dedicated to the slugs that live in my bathroom. the piece depicts a woman taking a selfie, with colourful static slugs coming out of her mouth, on her head and face, in her hair, and on her phone. The slugs leave colourful, glitching slug trails behind them. The image background is green static with purple static drips framing the piece. The woman has black and bleach blonde eyebrows, and long braids, two of which are curled on her head like slug horns. Their hair matches their black and white cow print phone case, and black and white nails.

there were multiple generations of slugs that lived in my bathroom at one point, and no matter how much i would move them out, more would just come. these slugs lived in my shower, crossing my face washers, leaving their slime trails behind, and for a while, before i moved them, i got to see them grow from these tiny little itty-bitty babies to these giant big black monstrosities. i am also usually the only one in my household to see the slugs, as they are most active at night and on dark, damp, cloudy days, and i suffer from insomnia, so i tend to be up at night a lot. there was one slug that i let live in my bathroom for so long that it had twins, and for a little while, the family of 3 would come into the shower and eat (the grime?) together as a little family. i think the baby slugs were eventually washed away or something because i didn’t see them again after a while, and i think the big one died from old slug age, and i haven’t seen any new slugs since. so, i guess this artwork was sort of a memorial for them, as well as the idea of the slugs seemingly coming out of nowhere again and again.
